Real Good/Feels Good
A Spell by Alyssa Berg
She sent this little book to me, eight pages, color, bound with red thread. It’s a little drop of a spell to do something, dedicated to “WINTER 2014.” It’s printed and then drawn on, so handled by a person. Edition of 13, so rare and special (and a magic number, ha ha). The drawings are rough and quick, made for utility but then fanciness added like pink pens and collagy color.
Once I made a little book to try to cast a spell and it seemed to work (well, what I wanted to happen did happen). It’s silly, spells! Berg’s little book is like a spell recipe that tricks you into casting it. You read carefully, look closely (can’t be helped, it looks really nice) and then at the end the spell is “You are here” which of course you are since you are so intently looking and reading. Nice trick, a sleight of hand like all spells.
But after that there’s “WARNING: Spells are magic and magic is real. Proceed with (and this part I think might be different for each book) A FOCUSED MIND”. So it’s real too.
Alyssa Berg is someone who makes work that works as hard as art as it does as comics. She investigates and accepts what materials do while finding what they can say. The things she makes are beautiful and confusing at the same time which is the best.
Mr. Warren Craghead reviewed a mini I made this winter. Thank-you, kind sir!!
